Our must-haves Le Porte-Vue" viewpoint in Château-Thébaud

A panoramic view of the Maine valley

A work of art by Emmanuel Ritz suspended in the landscape. At Château-Thébaud, the “Porte-vue” viewpoint juts into the sky like a dizzying spire.

The "Porte-vue A daring panoramic viewpoint on the Maine

In Château-Thébaud, Le Porte-vue lookout stands like a link between sky and rock. This 23-metre-long Corten steel footbridge, 20 metres of which is cantilevered, overlooks the Maine valley at a height of almost 43 metres. Designed by the architect Emmanuel Ritz, it offers a breathtaking panorama of the cliffs of Maisdon-sur-Sèvre and the natural site of Pont Caffino.

A work by Journey through the vineyards

Inaugurated in 2020, Le Porte-vue is one of the stages in the artistic journey Le Voyage dans le Vignoble, devised by Le Voyage à Nantes. Jean Blaise, seduced by the magic of the site, initiated this exceptional project. More than just a viewpoint, it’s an experience of raw nature, contemporary architecture and height.

The viewpoint Le Porte-vue A project born of love

It was during a visit to Château-Thébaud that Jean Blaise, former director of Le Voyage à Nantes, was struck by the power of the site. The idea for the belvedere, now part of the “Voyage dans le Vignoble” itinerary, was born. Buoyed by the tenacity of the local councillors and stakeholders, the project has come to fruition despite the technical challenges associated with the site.

Architecture in dialogue with the landscape in the Maine valley

The choice of Emmanuel Ritz is not insignificant. A specialist in mountain structures, he has designed a panoramic belvedere that sublimates the emptiness of the landscape, while fitting in with the spirit of the place. His approach: to show the landscape, the Maine valley and the vines resting on the granite cliff opposite… but also the promontory itself, in all its boldness and sobriety.
