Tourism and Disability

The Tourisme & Handicap mark is a national mark awarded to sites, places of interest and accommodation adapted for people with disabilities.

Tourism & Disability A commitment to an inclusive welcome

Introduced in 2001, the Tourisme & Handicap label is a mark of quality in hospitality. It identifies the accessibility of holiday, leisure and cultural facilities, accommodation, restaurants and tourist information centres (tourist offices) for people with the main disabilities (hearing, mental, motor and visual).

The Vignoble de Nantes tourist office has been awarded the Tourisme & Handicap mark for its reception desk for all 4 types of disability: hearing, mental, motor and visual. A number of service providers in the Vignoble de Nantes area have been awarded the Tourisme & Handicap label for their establishments.

The Tourist Office Winner of the 2023 accessible tourism trophy

On 7 June 2023 in Paris, we were honoured to receive the Trophée du Tourisme Accessible 2023 in the ” Tourist Offices – Tourist Information ” category, awarded by the Tourisme et Handicaps association and presented by ADN Tourisme.

The Trophées du Tourisme Accessible are organised by the Tourisme & Handicaps association, under the aegis of the Direction Générale des Entreprises (DGE), with the support of the Agence nationale pour les Chèques-Vacances (ANCV). They recognise the commitment and determination of sites and structures that have been awarded the Tourisme & Handicap label to welcome people with disabilities by offering them adapted services.

The Tourist Office and the brand

TheDestination Vignoble Nantais Tourist Office is committed to responsible tourism and has been awarded the national Tourisme et Handicap (Tourism and Disability) mark to promote inclusive tourism with the emergence of tourist products and services accessible to all!

Destination Vignoble Nantais wants to make its partners aware of this state mark. The tourist office has drawn up a questionnaire for service providers to help them identify accessible services and provide information on suitable facilities, and would like to thank Loire-Atlantique Développement for its technical support. An explanatory leaflet is available for service providers. If you are willing and motivated, together we can make the “Tourisme & Handicap” mark a reality for the whole of the Vignoble Nantais Destination!

What is the brand Tourism & Disability?

The Tourisme & Handicap mark encourages the emergence of tourist products and services that are genuinely open to all.

It guarantees all tourists with disabilities access to information enabling them to be as independent as possible. It is aimed at individual customers with specific needs. This mark can be awarded for 2, 3 or 4 types of disability: motor, mental, hearing and visual.

It is the result of a partnership between the Ministry of Tourism, tourism professionals and associations representing people with disabilities. The Association Tourisme et Handicaps (ATH) is responsible for the national coordination of the scheme.

At departmental level, Loire-Atlantique Développement is responsible for its implementation.

Regulatory text in force :

Law of 11 February 2005 on equal rights and opportunities, participation and citizenship for people with disabilities. Establishments open to the public (E.R.P) must be accessible to all disabled people by 1 January 2015 (law of 11 February 2005 on equal rights and opportunities, participation and citizenship for disabled people). This law already applies to all public buildings and rental accommodation projects for which planning permission was submitted after 1 January 2007.

A Tourisme & Handicap certification process in no way replaces the compliance requirements of this law. Checking that your facilities comply with the law is the responsibility of an accessibility control office.

The national "Acceslibre" platform

In France, almost one person in 5 is or will be disabled at some point in their lives. Getting around and going out can become a problem, so it’s vital to know whether a place is welcoming and suitable.

Acceslibre is a national digital service providing information on the level of accessibility of establishments open to the public: restaurants, shops, cinemas, etc. The aim is to enable all users, whatever their disability, to find out whether an establishment is accessible to them.

Tourism and Disability Financial assistance

The Region is supporting tourist operators wishing to improve their facilities for disabled visitors through its Disability and Tourismcall for projects. The aid covers up to 60% of expenditure, up to a maximum of €10,000, for any investment to create or adapt an accessible offer. Accommodation providers, visitor sites, cycle hire companies, leisure centres and tourist offices are all eligible. The scheme is open until 31 December 2027, and projects must be completed within two years of signing the agreement.
