Our must-haves Clisson, the place to be

A must-see destination in the heart of the Vignoble Nantais, the town of Clisson promises an unforgettable journey through heritage, nature and culture. Take the time to visit Clisson and discover its castle, river, cobbled streets and Italian architecture, not forgetting the site of the world-famous Hellfest festival.

Visit Clisson and Discover its medieval heritage

Take a stroll through the town or one of our guided tours of Clisson, and embark on a journey back in time to discover Clisson’s extensive medieval heritage. A visit to Clisson means exploring a town steeped in history and symbolism.

A visit to the Château de Clisson, built between the 12th and 17th centuries, will take you back in time and introduce you to its defensive architecture, while enjoying panoramic views over the town from its ramparts.

Beneath Clisson’s majestic wooden market hall, one of the largest and oldest in France, you’ll be transported by the vibrant atmosphere of bygone days, where the town’s market is still held on Tuesday and Friday mornings.

Visiting Clisson also means strolling through a postcard setting where every stone tells a story. As you explore the picturesque alleyways where historic figures such asOlivier V de Clisson and François II, the last Duke of Brittany, were born, you’ll be charmed by the unique atmosphere that reigns in every corner of the town.

Clisson The Breton town turned Italian

Take a stroll through the town of Clisson and you’ll soon feel like you’re in a real Italian landscape. Antique-style roof tiles, thin bricks, umbrella pines, giant cypresses… there’s no doubt that François Fédéric Lemot‘s trip to Italy, when he redesigned the town in the 19th century, smacked of the south.

It was in the magnificent park of La Garenne Lemot that Napoleon’s famous sculptor best expressed his love of Italy and demonstrated his incredible talent.

You’ll marvel at the magnificent neoclassical villa, a Tuscan and Umbrian farmhouse, a temple surrounded by 18 columns, statues, a grotto, a tomb and many other Italian inspirations, all set in a wooded park with Mediterranean vegetation.

What a nice surprise

“What a lovely surprise this beautiful village is. Full of narrow streets, the splendid Château and Les Halles. Take an ice-cream break while strolling around and admiring the view over the bridge.”

A city to explore on foot

“A town to explore on foot or by car, the itinerary offered by the Nantes Vineyards Tourist Office, located next to Les Halles, is superb.
Ancient and more recent monuments bear witness to the town’s history, Italian influences add colour to the city, and the two rivers flowing together at the foot of the castle add a touch of romance. In short, this day spent in Clisson was full of wonderful discoveries, and I can’t recommend this visit enough”.
