The banks of the Loire offer a journey between water and land, from Saint-Julien-de-Concelles to Divatte-sur-Loire. From the Divatte levee, the view opens up. Over the islands, the birds of the Loire and the market gardens. Here, the river sets the pace for strolls and suspended moments.

The banks of the Loire Nature, landscapes and the Divatte levee

Considered to be Europe’s last wild river, the Loire creates spectacular, ever-changing landscapes. Sandbanks, wooded islands, winding boires and mudflats are home to precious biodiversity. The birds of the Loire find refuge here, to the delight of attentive observers.

The Divatte levee stretches for 16 km between Saint-Julien-de-Concelles and Divatte-sur-Loire. Completed in 1856, it is the last of the Loire’s dykes designed to contain the river’s floodwaters while protecting farmland. It is named after the river “La Divatte” on the border between the Loire-Atlantique and Maine-et-Loire departments.

This raised ribbon runs alongside the Loire on one side and farmland on the other, offering remarkable views of the river, its sandbanks and its islets. Today, it is a popular route for cyclists and walkers, immersed in a setting that is both natural and man-made.

Activities and walks on the banks of the Loire

On the land side, the Loire à Vélo© crosses the Vignoble Nantais via the Divatte levee. This safe route immerses you in the Loire countryside and the meandering river.

On the water side, navigating the Loire means embracing the rhythm of the river. Come aboard Louise de Loire, a traditional canal boat. Or let yourself be carried away by Détours en Loire, for cultural cruises along the water. If you’re feeling more sporty, take a canoe trip with John Patach along the banks of the river in a silent and wild atmosphere.
