The Marais de Goulaine Changing landscapes through the seasons

This listed site, which is part of the European Natura 2000 network, extends over 5 communes and is home to an abundant diversity of flora and fauna. The wetland covers a total area of around 2,000 hectares, with a flood zone of 1,215 hectares. With the exception of a permanent body of water at Pont de L’Ouen, the marsh is flooded in winter. In summer, it is dry. All you can see of the vast meadows with their luxuriant vegetation are the “moats”, small channels lined with willows.

Vineyards on the edge of the marsh and market gardening give the landscape a picturesque appearance that changes with the seasons.

Visited the Maison Bleue Marais de Goulaine visitor centre

At the heart of the Marais de Goulaine, the Maison Bleue in Haute Goulaine is a place of welcome, information and education. It is also a venue for exhibitions and events. Artists exhibit their work on the theme of nature and the environment from April to October. Nature outings around the Marais allow visitors to discover the exceptional flora and fauna of the area.

The Marais de Goulaine A preserved site ideal for birdwatching

More than 143 species of birds are present more or less regularly on the Goulaine marshes. Some rare species nest here. There are also a number of rare plants, such as the “succise des prés”. It is also a favourable environment for insects, butterflies and fish. This marsh is one of the largest pike spawning grounds in France.
