Discover Notre Dame church and its remarkable bell tower
Built on the site of a former collegiate church destroyed during the Vendée wars, Notre Dame church was completely rebuilt in 18887-88, based on Italian models, by Nantes architect René Ménard. It has been listed as a Historic Monument since 2006. This listing is due to its campanile (bell tower), inspired by central Italy, and its main building, inspired by a basilica in Rome, San Giovanni e San Paolo. It is the most recognisable Italian feature in the city.
Inside, you'll find a remarkable 1930 fresco by Clissonnais artist Georges Lusseau depicting the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
To get the most out of the church, you can of course admire it from the inside. However, you can also view it from different vantage points, such as the valley bridge, the terrace of the Best Western Hotel, the Viaduc de Clisson or the terrace of the Villa Lemot.
Since 2024, the church can be visited using a dedicated application on the Apple ISO and a website: https://www.belleseglises.com/eglises/1467
