Parc de la Garenne Valentin et l'église de la Trinité à Clisson

Originally, the Church of the Trinity was the church of a Benedictine priory dependent on the abbeys of Saint Martin de Vertou and Saint Jouin de Marnes. In the 11th century, the priory was occupied by the Canons Regular of St Augustine. At an undetermined time, it was returned to the Benedictine monks (probably in the 12th century) of St Jouin de Marnes. In the seventeenth century (1645), a small community of Benedictine nuns settled there, set up a college and remained there until the Revolution, building a convent whose architecture was inspired by the Fontevraud religious reform. La Trinité was burnt down in 1794 by the Colonnes Infernales. When Notre Dame church was being restored, the inhabitants of the Trinité suburb protested and also demanded that their church be restored. The authorities agreed to make the church a branch of the Notre Dame parish church, where masses would be celebrated on Sundays and public holidays. In 1867-70, La Trinité underwent restoration work that caused it to lose much of its appeal.

The Trinité church is the oldest church in Clisson, along with the Fontevriste convent with its multi-generational architecture (from the 12th to the 19th century). Badly damaged during the Vendée wars, the outbuildings were refurbished in the 19th century by Jacques Charles Valentin, on the site of the former convent, which had been partly demolished.

Today, the church is being restored, but you can still admire it from the outside, so we invite you to take a stroll through the Garenne Valentin park.
