Description

Discover the church of Notre-Dame de Clisson, an emblematic building in the heart of the town, recognisable by its remarkable bell tower, a rare architectural signature inspired by Italian influences.
Built on the site of a former collegiate church destroyed during the Vendée wars, Notre-Dame church was rebuilt in 1887-1888 by Nantes architect René Ménard, in a style resolutely inspired by Italy. Listed as a Historic Monument since 2006, its distinctive features include a bell tower reminiscent of central Italy and architecture reminiscent of the Roman basilica of San Giovanni e Paolo. Today, it is one of the most emblematic markers of Clisson's Italian identity. Inside, a remarkable fresco painted in 1930 by Clisson artist Georges Lusseau depicts the Assumption of the Virgin and is well worth a visit. To fully appreciate its uniqueness, take the time to observe the church from different angles: from the Pont de la Vallée bridge, the terrace of the Best Western hotel, the Clisson viaduct or the terrace of the Villa Lemot, all vantage points that reveal its silhouette and elegance. Since 2024, the tour has also been available via a dedicated iOS app and website: https://www.belleseglises.com/eglises/1467
